Market Type

In Alaska, cannabis is regulated by the Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office (AMCO). Medical and adult-use cannabis are controlled by a unified ruleset, and Alaska generally treats all marijuana as adult use.

Metrc and Inventory

Alaska uses METRC as their state traceability system.

Purchase Limits

Store sales limitA retail marijuana store may not sell in a single day:
  • more than one ounce of usable marijuana;
  • more than seven grams of marijuana concentrate for inhalation, or
  • more than 5,600 milligrams of THC in combined sales of marijuana and marijuana products
Possession limitA person who is 21 years of age or older may not possess in the aggregate more than:
  • One ounce or less of marijuana in usable form; and
  • Six marijuana plants, with no more than three mature and flowering plants producing usable marijuana at any one time

Equivalencies

Alaska’s equivalencies are unusual in that they depend on the variety of products in the transaction. While flower and concentrates both have a limitation of weight if sold exclusively with like type items, when sold with marijuana product (other product types), the entire transaction is limited by the potency.

Taxes

Alaska levies a state excise tax upstream at the cultivation level rather than a statewide retail sales tax. Cultivators remit a per-ounce excise tax to the Department of Revenue (for example, $50 per ounce of mature bud/flower). Cities and municipalities may also impose their own local taxes within their limits.

Delivery

Delivery not allowedAlaska does not currently allow home delivery.

State Resources

The AMCO compiles current statutes and regulations.
