Fanta was created in 1940 in Germany by Max Keith, head of Coca-Cola’s German operations, as a substitute for Coca-Cola. The original 1940s formula was derived from "leftovers," primarily apple fiber (pomace) and whey (a cheese-making byproduct), During a brainstorming session to name the new, fruity concoction, salesman Joe Knipp suggested "Fanta" based on Keith’s suggestion to use their Fantasie (imagination)
